Project Overview

Byobu is a Japanese term for decorative, multi-panel screens that serve as folding room dividers. As an open source software project, Byobu is an elegant enhancement of the otherwise functional, plain, practical GNU Screen. Byobu includes an enhanced profile, configuration utilities, and system status notifications for the GNU screen window manager as well as the Tmux terminal multiplexer. Byobu is developed and released as free software under the GPLv3.

Originally designed for the Ubuntu distribution of Linux, Byobu is now supported on many Linux and UNIX distributions. Byobu is pronounced like this.

THE AUTHOR

Dustin Kirkland

Dustin Kirkland originally authored Byobu in December 2008 while working for Canonical on the Ubuntu server and cloud team. He has continuously maintained the project since then, in his spare time.

Dustin Kirkland was an engineer, manager, product manager, and VP of Product for Ubuntu at Canonical. Dustin lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, daughters, and Australian Shepherds.
